Principal Investigator
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Diego. I received my BSc in Psychology and PhD in Neuroscience from McGill University, and completed postdoctoral training at UCSD’s Department of Radiology. I have a vested interest in identifying neurobiologically-informed predictive markers of adolescent psychiatric disorders (e.g., through integration of multimodal MRI, genetics, and temperament) to meaningfully improve treatments for affected individuals. My research has been supported by the National Institutes of Mental Health, the Brain Behavior Foundation, the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind, and by Canadian federal (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) and provincial (Fonds de Recherche du Quebec- Santé) funding mechanisms. I am also an investigator within the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study Consortium, where I co-chairs the Professional Development Workgroup and am a member of the Image Analysis Workgroup. Outside of the lab, you can find me running along the coastline, dancing, or getting lost in a good book!
Lab Members
Abhay Lal, BTech
I am a Master’s student in Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego and a researcher in the BRIDGE Lab. My interests lie in applying artificial intelligence to healthcare using data-driven methods. Before joining UCSD, I completed a Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, where I also gained research experience in computer vision and natural language processing through projects at Wells Fargo and the National University of Singapore. At UCSD, my current work involves integrating multimodal MRI, genetic, and behavioral data from large-scale studies such as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to improve early risk stratification of psychiatric disorders. Outside of research, I enjoy exploring music, discovering new cafés, and playing sports such as 8-ball pool and football.
Shefali Rai, BASc
I am completing my PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary, where I use precision functional MRI to study unique brain network features in children and adults. My work focuses on improving the reliability of fMRI measures to better capture individualized brain network organization. I am excited to join the BRIDGE Lab as a postdoctoral scholar, where I aim to integrate neuroimaging and genetics to uncover mechanisms of eating disorders in youth. Outside of research, I enjoy baking, training for triathlons, and being outdoors with my family!
Co-Mentored Trainees
Alison Rigby, MS, MA, MT-BC
I am a PhD student in the Neurosciences Graduate Program at UCSD, working with Drs. Terry Jernigan, Anders Dale, Carolina Makowski, and Bradley Voytek. I began my doctoral training examining associations between body mass index and brain microstructure in adolescence using ABCD Study data, leveraging large-scale population neuroimaging and computational modeling approaches. My dissertation research now focuses on modeling infant brain structural and functional development in relation to emerging language acquisition in the HBCD Study, with the long-term goal of identifying risk factors for developmental language disorders. My career path spanning roles as a neurobiologist at Merck Research Laboratories and as a board-certified music therapist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia shaped my interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience, development, language, and musicality. Driven by a passion for translational science, I aim to bridge basic neuroscience and clinical practice to bring bench to bedside and improve outcomes for children at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders. Beyond research, I love adventuring with friends, chasing California sunsets, music-making and dancing, plane spotting, and immersing myself in all things sci-fi and astro.
Ashley Becker, BSc
I am a post-bacc researcher who recently graduated from UCSD with a BS in Cognitive Science, Specialisation in Clinical Aspects (Spring 2025). I am interested in exploring the dynamic relationship between neuroimaging and mental health outcomes in adolescents. Building on my honors thesis, advised by Dr. Carolina Makowski, my current work with the ABCD Study investigates the intersections between cognition and mental health disorders found in diffusion imaging. In my free time, I enjoy crochet, piano, and steeping the perfect cup of tea.
Jonathan Ahern, BSc
I am a PhD student in the Greene Lab at UCSD. Before beginning my PhD, I completed a BS in Cognitive Science at UCSD, followed by 2 years of post-baccalaureate research at the Population Neuroscience and Genetics (PNG) Center, centered at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research. At PNG Center, my research focused on using large population-based datasets, such as the UK Biobank and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, to understand the genetic, imaging, and environmental differences involved in neuropsychiatric outcomes ranging from Depression to Parkinson’s Disease. During my PhD, I hope to build upon those skills to increase our understanding of functional organization patterns' role in developmental disorders. Outside work, I enjoy hiking, listening to podcasts, and cooking.
